Engelbert’s earlier memo to teams emphasized a thoughtful, respectful approach consistent with the league’s long-standing values and highlighted that player eligibility rules are collectively bargained. The current collective bargaining agreement specifies that only women may play, without detailing gender identity, prompting scrutiny. No transgender women are currently on a WNBA roster, and the discussion aligns with broader political debates on trans inclusion in sports.
