Woman Beats Terminal Breast Cancer, Gives Birth After Innovative Treatment
Maralee Lellio survived Stage IV breast cancer that spread to her brain, underwent experimental therapy and later welcomed a second daughter.
Maralee Lellio received a Stage II breast cancer diagnosis at age 29 and pursued chemotherapy, surgery and embryo freezing before a double mastectomy. The cancer returned as Stage IV with a large, incurable brain tumor discovered in 2020, prompting a craniotomy and radiation at the Cleveland Clinic. Under Dr. Halle Moore, she was treated with a PARP inhibitor targeting her BRCA-1 mutation, which reduced the tumor to near-nothing over two years.
After stopping the medication and waiting a year, Lellio conceived naturally and delivered a second daughter in July 2024. She now works as a teacher, undergoes frequent scans, and is scheduled for a hysterectomy to lower recurrence risk.
