Woman Hospitalized After Possible Shark Bite on Martha’s Vineyard
A woman in her late 20s was taken to hospital with a leg wound after a suspected shark bite while swimming at Norton Point, Edgartown.
Around 1:40 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to Norton Point in Edgartown, Massachusetts, after a woman in her late twenties suffered a leg injury while swimming. Officials, including Town Administrator James Hagerty, noted that the wounds matched a shark bite, although no shark was seen at the scene. The injuries were classified as non-life-threatening and the victim retained her leg, leading to her hospitalization for treatment.
In response, South Beach was shut down for several hours while conditions were evaluated and the decision to reopen was considered. Hagerty praised the rapid actions of emergency personnel and beach staff, and reminded swimmers to remain vigilant and obey lifeguard directions and posted advisories.
