Woman with decades-long eating disorder left waiting for care amid hospital delays

Sharon Ereaux, a long-time sufferer of an eating disorder, called an ambulance after experiencing a rapid heart rate, chest pain and fatigue linked to re-feeding syndrome. She arrived at an emergency department and was told a transfer to a mental health unit would occur, but the transfer never materialised. Over three days she remained on a couch and recliner, despite escalating concerns about dehydration.

When a bed finally became available, a staff member informed her she would be sent home rather than admitted. Experts say her story reflects broader misconceptions and stigma that prevent timely care for many of Australia’s more than 1.1 million people with eating disorders.
