Workers at Motor Oil stage 24-hour strike over fatal explosion

Employees gathered at Motor Oil’s site on Wednesday to begin a 24-hour walkout demanded after two workers died in an on-site explosion.

On Wednesday morning, dozens of Motor Oil employees converged on the company's premises to commence a 24-hour strike triggered by a recent explosion that killed two workers. Demonstrators carried signs outside the plant, drawing attention to the incident that occurred during maintenance work. The Panhellenic Federation of Energy demanded that those responsible be held accountable, arguing that such accidents should not be accepted as inevitable workplace risks.

In its statement, the federation emphasized that subcontracted laborers are equal colleagues and must receive the same level of safety training, supervision, and working conditions. It warned against a two-tier safety system that prioritises production over human life. A follow-up gathering is planned for 11 a.m. at Perivolakia in Corinth, directly across from the Labor Inspection office.

Why it matters

The strike highlights ongoing safety concerns in high-risk industries and pressure on companies to protect all workers equally.
