World War II bomb disposal forces closure of Üllői út segment in Budapest
A section of Üllői út between Thököly út and Haladás utca was shut on Sunday while bomb squads neutralised a World War II era bomb and other explosives.
In Budapest's XVIII. district, authorities closed the stretch of Üllői út from Thököly út to Haladás utca on Sunday to allow bomb disposal crews to defuse a World War II bomb uncovered at a Regény utca construction site. The find included a 100-kilogram FAB-100 bomb and 24 other explosive devices of varying types and sizes. The road will remain blocked from roughly 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. while the operation proceeds.
Tram line 50 will continue between Kispest, Határ út, Villanytelep and between Szarvas csárda tér and Pestszentlőrinc Béke tér, but will skip the closed segment; a replacement bus marked 50 will serve the gap. Bus routes 93A and 236 are being rerouted, with 93A avoiding Szarvas csárda and 236 detouring toward Havanna housing estate, though all scheduled stops remain in service. The Budapest Transport Company (BKK) confirmed the adjustments.
Why it matters
The road and transit disruptions affect daily commuters and highlight ongoing risks from unexploded wartime ordnance.
