Writers Guild settles antitrust case as Paramount-Warner merger moves forward

The Writers Guild of America East and West announced a settlement of their antitrust action intended to stop the proposed Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The agreement follows Paramount’s deal with 12 state attorneys general, which cleared a major regulatory obstacle.

As part of the settlement, Paramount has committed to a five-year prohibition on a writer at one outlet's Broadcast and will provide $17.5 million to the guild’s health fund plus cover legal costs. The guild acknowledged that it could not block the merger but emphasized that its advocacy highlighted the potential harms of such consolidation. It reiterated its intent to continue fighting industry concentration and to push for structural separation between studios and streaming platforms. The settlement allows the merger to advance while securing financial and employment protections for guild members.
