WRU advises clubs to postpone games as record heat dries out rugby pitches
The Welsh Rugby Union has sent safety guidance to community clubs, allowing match postponements until mid-September after an unprecedented summer left pitches extremely hard.
Wales experienced its highest temperature ever on 24 June and the driest July since records began, turning rugby pitches across the country bone-dry and rock-hard. In reaction, the Welsh Rugby Union issued a circular to all community clubs detailing how to inspect field conditions before the season’s opening matches. The advice highlights specific hazards such as uneven surfaces, holes, cracks and hard, bare zones in scrums, tackle zones and in-goal areas.
Clubs are permitted to postpone games without fear of sanction until 13 September, and match officials may overrule decisions on safety grounds. WRU community director Geraint John stressed that player welfare must be the top priority while still encouraging games where conditions allow. A further update to the guidance will be released after the current deadline.
