WWII bombs discovered on seabed of Thessaloniki port amid expansion work

A magnetic survey uncovered dozens of World War II bombs on the floor of Thessaloniki’s harbour as the city prepares to enlarge its sixth pier.

During a magnetic survey of the Thessaloniki harbour, officials discovered a significant number of World War II bombs lying on the sea floor where the sixth pier is being expanded. The ordnance is concentrated in two locations: directly beneath the caissons that will support the new pier surface and at the entrance-exit point of the deepened berth intended for larger ships. The detection was made using magnetic equipment, and roughly eighty of the bombs each weigh around 50 kg. The port authority has appealed to the state for rapid support in removing the explosives, emphasizing that the caisson construction is scheduled to finish by the upcoming March and that the seabed must be cleared beforehand.

Why it matters
