WWII Soviet demolition bomb uncovered in Budapest apartment complex garden

Construction work at a downtown Budapest condo revealed a 100-kilogram Soviet FAB-100 bomb from World War II, which was removed by the Hungarian Defence Forces.

During ground-breaking activities at an apartment block on Hercegprímás utca 4. in Budapest's 5th district, a suspected bomb was discovered in the garden. Pap Ferenc, the chief of the weapons-inspection patrol, identified the object as a Soviet FAB-100 demolition bomb from the Second World War, weighing roughly 100 kilograms. The Hungarian Defence Forces' 1st Armour-Artillery and Cavalry Regiment secured and transported the device to its central storage facility for later destruction.

No additional hazardous items were found on site. The incident prompted the evacuation of approximately 100 people, including residents and patrons of two nearby restaurants, and caused temporary interruptions to electricity, water, and gas services. Authorities reminded the public that any found unexploded ordnance must be reported immediately to local police or municipal officials.

Why it matters

Unexploded WWII munitions still pose safety risks in urban areas, requiring costly evacuations and infrastructure disruptions.
