X adds feature to reveal government-mandated post restrictions

X rolled out an update to its transparency tools, now flagging posts whose reach was reduced due to compliance with local statutes. The feature, part of the existing "Under the Hood" option, lets active users download a JSON file that lists any down-ranking, the specific posts affected, and the nation that issued the request. This follows a series of openness measures, including publishing the parameters of its feed-ranking algorithm and releasing additional code details.

While the company argues the data will shed light on moderation practices, free-speech advocates caution that some governments exploit legal provisions to curb political speech. The update also clarifies that prior transparency reports only offered aggregated data, not post-by-post information. X’s vice president of product, Keith Coleman, previously noted that the code releases would likely surprise many observers.
