X removes over 13,000 accounts tied to foreign influence campaigns

The X platform has suspended more than 13,000 accounts it says were part of influence operations linked to Iran, Russia and China targeting U.S. political discussion.

X reported that it has recently taken down more than 13,000 accounts it attributes to three separate foreign influence operations linked to Iran, Russia and China. According to the company's Global Government Affairs team, these networks employed fake profiles to disseminate and boost political content about U.S. candidates and public figures across the political spectrum. The suspensions are part of X's broader effort to enforce its Authenticity Policy and protect the integrity of political discourse ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections.

The platform said its safety team uses a mix of automated detection and manual investigation, supplemented by Community Notes and a Civic Integrity reporting flow. X emphasized its commitment to maintaining an open, authentic public square while preventing coordinated inauthentic behavior. The company will continue monitoring and enforcing its rules through Election Day and beyond.

Why it matters

Foreign influence campaigns can distort democratic debate, and X's removal of thousands of suspect accounts aims to protect election integrity.
