X uncovers Chinese bot network spreading anti-AI data-center messages

X's safety team identified a network of 200,000 accounts, with 200 posting AI data-center criticism that could sway public debate.

X announced that its safety investigators discovered a large-scale bot operation comprising 200,000 accounts, with a subset of 200 accounts disseminating anti-AI data-center narratives. These messages featured AI-generated cartoons and commentary suggesting that data centers increase residential electricity bills and overload nearby power grids. The content was produced using OpenAI's ChatGPT, echoing a June OpenAI report that identified China-linked accounts creating comparable material.

X pledged to enforce its authenticity policy by suspending violators. The report also noted that the same users generated insults toward Chinese dissidents and critiqued U.S. tech policies. Analysts, such as Goldman Sachs, have warned that electricity rates have already risen by 6.9 percent year-over-year, a trend that could continue as AI facilities expand.

Why it matters

The discovery shows how coordinated online campaigns can influence policy debates on AI and energy costs.
