Xavier Becerra pays daughter over $17K for deputy policy director role
Xavier Becerra’s gubernatorial campaign paid his daughter, immigration lawyer Reyes-Becerra, more than $17,000 for work as deputy policy director.
Campaign finance filings show that Xavier Becerra’s campaign has spent over $17,000 to employ his daughter, immigration attorney Reyes-Becerra, as a deputy policy director. Initially a volunteer, she was promoted after the primary and now helps craft communications and brief the candidate on topics ranging from health care to wildfire relief. Reyes-Becerra’s background includes managing attorney work at the California Immigration Project and a vice-chair role with First 5 Monterey County, which allocates tobacco tax revenue to early-childhood programs.
The campaign’s spokesperson, Jonathan Underland, highlighted her immigration expertise as valuable to the team. Records also indicate she received roughly $4,300 in travel reimbursements. Legal compliance specialists note that while hiring family members is legal, the pay level and actual work performed could be scrutinized for nepotism and optics, especially as Becerra faces limited public exposure after his primary win.
Why it matters
The hiring raises questions about nepotism and the use of campaign funds in a high-profile California race.
