Xbox creates XP division to oversee films, TV, merchandise and live experiences

Xbox announced a new XP unit that will centralize non-gaming projects such as movies, TV shows, consumer products and live events.

Xbox unveiled a new XP division to consolidate all activities that extend its franchises beyond video games, covering film, television, merchandise, live experiences and brand collaborations. The unit formalizes four focus areas: Xbox Pictures for linear storytelling, Xbox Products for fan-oriented goods, Xbox Places for events and attractions, and Xbox Partnerships for creator and brand deals. Kayleen Walters, who previously oversaw Mojang, has been appointed president of XP, while Maria Angelidou-Smith will succeed her at Mojang after leaving Reddit.

Ongoing projects include a sequel to the Minecraft movie, a third season of Prime Video’s Fallout series, a Call of Duty film, and a Diablo animated series for Netflix. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma communicated the restructuring to staff as part of a larger "reset" that has already involved layoffs, studio sales and a new studio hierarchy placing Activision in charge of Halo. The initiative revives a 2012 effort, Xbox Entertainment Studios, that was shuttered two years after its launch.

Why it matters

Xbox's XP unit aims to turn its game franchises into broader entertainment and consumer brands.
