Xbox launches AI-focused Labs to explore automated game porting and modding

Microsoft has created Xbox Labs, a small team of developers and scientists tasked with using AI to decompile and recompile games for new platforms.

Microsoft announced the formation of Xbox Labs, a dedicated unit of game makers, engineers and researchers to probe the rapid rise of AI-assisted game decompilation and recompilation. By leveraging artificial-intelligence models, the lab will enable classic and current titles to run on platforms like Apple Silicon or within browsers via WebAssembly. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma highlighted that these experiments question long-standing ideas about hardware dependence and the divide between creation and play.

The initiative will operate transparently, learning from community efforts and releasing any useful tools to the broader developer ecosystem. Success will be judged by how many players both consume and create games, while Microsoft reaffirms its commitment to protecting intellectual property. The move signals Xbox’s intent to stay at the forefront of AI’s impact on gaming accessibility and innovation.

Why it matters

It shows how AI could reshape game compatibility, expanding access while raising IP concerns.
