Xbox rolls out disc-to-digital conversion for existing game libraries
Microsoft announced a new Xbox feature that lets owners convert supported physical discs into digital copies, beginning with Xbox Insider testing on August 31.
Microsoft revealed a disc-to-digital conversion feature for Xbox consoles, allowing users to digitize many of their existing Xbox One and Xbox Series X physical games. By inserting a supported disc and launching it, the system grants a digital entitlement linked to that specific disc, which can be transferred between accounts. The feature will be tested by Xbox Insiders starting August 31, with a wider rollout planned for later months.
When a game is digitized and supported, it can also be accessed on PC through Xbox Play Anywhere or streamed via Xbox Cloud Gaming. Publisher approval will determine initial game eligibility, with thousands of titles expected at launch and more added over time. The move follows Sony's recent decision to end physical PlayStation discs for new releases after January 2028, though Microsoft has not announced a similar end to disc production.
