Xi Jinping pushes green computing and renewable power in Inner Mongolia's Ulanqab
During a visit to Ulanqab, President Xi Jinping urged the use of wind and solar energy to power the region's expanding green computing sector and emphasized ecological protection.
In Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, President Xi Jinping called for greater exploitation of wind and solar resources to drive the green computing industry. He was briefed on the Chahar High-Tech Development Zone’s role in the "East Data, West Computing" program, which redirects computing demand from eastern to western China, and urged that existing facilities operate efficiently while new ones stay on schedule.
Official figures show 109 computing centre projects signed by August 2026, generating 5.68 billion yuan in revenue, a 40.3% year-on-year rise. The city’s cool climate allows natural cooling for data centres most of the year, supporting its three-year "token city" plan launched in late 2025. Xi also inspected the Huangqihai Lake reserve, stressing full implementation of China’s wetland protection law and the importance of restoring degraded wetlands that have rebounded since 1993.
Why it matters
The push links renewable energy to China’s fast-growing data-center industry, affecting tech growth and environmental policy.
