Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner backs owners' salary-cap plan ahead of lockout

Hal Steinbrenner said he fully supports the owners’ proposals that include a salary cap as MLB heads toward a possible lockout on Dec. 1.

During the New York Yankees’ season-end press conference, owner Hal Steinbrenner confirmed his support for the owners’ bargaining package that incorporates a salary cap. He highlighted his participation in drafting the proposals as a member of the labor policy committee and said the owners remain focused on reaching a deal that benefits both sides. Steinbrenner also referenced the Yankees’ record payroll of $336 million, the third-largest in 2026.

Players, represented by the MLBPA, have declared a cap non-negotiable, and the league anticipates a lockout on Dec. 1 when one outlet collective bargaining agreement ends. Commissioner Rob Manfred has argued that a cap would hurt competitive balance, while interim MLBPA executive director Bruce Meyer warned that caps would limit teams’ ability to improve. The dispute underscores widening payroll gaps across the league.
