Yashar Party Moves to Cancel Netanyahu Meeting on Election Oversight

Yashar leader Gadi Eisenkot has filed a petition to stop a planned meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Police Commissioner Danny Levy, arguing it could amount to unlawful election interference.

Gadi Eisenkot, head of the Yashar party, is seeking judicial intervention to block a meeting scheduled by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Police Commissioner Danny Levy. The request follows Levy’s refusal to attend a prior discussion with Ben-Gvir alone, amid concerns that the minister might exploit the forum for political gain ahead of the election. Eisenkot argues that Netanyahu, being a candidate, has no authority over election integrity, a role reserved for the Central Elections Committee, whose members were not invited.

The committee’s chairman, Justice Noam Sohlberg, has instructed both Netanyahu and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara to respond to the petition by a specified time. In a formal letter, the Yashar party asked the authorities to cancel the meeting, warning it could create a misleading perception of election flaws without basis.

Why it matters

The dispute raises questions about the separation of political campaigning and official election oversight in Israel.
