Year-Old Records Reveal Rapid Police Response to Minneapolis Church Shooting, Motive Remains Murky

A year after the deadly shooting at Minneapolis's Annunciation Church and School, city officials released a trove of documents that chronicle the immediate law-enforcement reaction and the aftermath of the Aug. 27, 2025, massacre. Dispatch logs show that officers from Minneapolis and several other agencies entered the scene roughly three and a half minutes after the first report, encountering a sanctuary riddled with bullet holes, blood, and the smell of gunpowder.

The 23-year-old shooter, Robin Westman, was found on the floor with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, surrounded by a rifle, shotgun, pistol, knives, smoke bombs and extensive ammunition. First responders provided emergency care, including a tourniquet that likely saved an adult victim’s life, and escorted the injured to hospitals. The released material includes extensive photographs, evidence inventories, and interview transcripts, yet it adds little to the understanding of Westman's motive, noting only vague expressions of hatred and admiration for past mass shooters. Interviews with Westman's father, ex-girlfriend, and former coworkers depict him as a socially isolated individual who had long-standing depression and occasional suicidal ideation, but no clear warning of violent intent.
