Yeast-derived supplement shown to revitalize cancer-fighting immunity in obese mice

Scientists discovered that a yeast beta-glucan supplement reprograms bone-marrow immune cells in obese mice, boosting their ability to fight colorectal, skin and breast cancers.

Researchers at Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin administered a yeast-based beta-glucan supplement to obese mice for four to twelve weeks, observing a reshaping of bone-marrow stem-cell maturation that produced trained immunity and more potent attacks on colorectal, skin and breast cancer cells. The enhanced anti-tumor effect remained even after the animals underwent weight loss, indicating correction of lingering immune dysfunction caused by obesity.

The study employed the food-grade product Wellmune™ from Kerry Group, noted for its strong safety profile. Lead investigators Frederick Sheedy and Helen Roche emphasized that this is the first demonstration of diet-delivered beta-glucan inducing trained immunity, a phenomenon previously achieved only via injections. Findings were published in the journal Cell Reports and set the stage for human trials in obese and immunocompromised populations.
