Yemen's government says Houthis fired ballistic missiles at al-Makha and Marib

Yemen's internationally recognised government reported that Houthi rebels launched a fresh wave of ballistic missiles at the Red Sea port city of al-Makha and residential neighborhoods in Marib on Monday, offering no details on injuries or deaths. The strikes came a day after Houthi missiles devastated al-Makha, killing at least seven and wounding dozens, and a drone attack in Shabwa killed two government soldiers. Yemeni forces said they retaliated by targeting Houthi positions in eastern al-Jawf, northwestern Saada and the al-Tibas sector of central Marib.

This surge in hostilities follows the collapse of a 2022 UN-brokered truce, which had held since April 2022, and follows a July 13 Saudi airstrike on Sanaa airport that reignited fighting. Since then, the Houthis have hit Saudi infrastructure and shipping in the Red Sea, prompting a Saudi-led coalition response. The United Nations warned that the renewed fighting threatens to undo the fragile peace and could draw the region into a wider confrontation. The latest missile attacks underscore the fragile security situation and the risk of further escalation.
