Yemen sees cholera cases triple in three weeks, straining war-torn hospitals

The World Health Organization reports that suspected cholera cases in Yemen have risen from 217 to 647 within three weeks, adding pressure to hospitals already dealing with war injuries.

According to the WHO, the number of suspected cholera infections in Yemen jumped from 217 in early September to 647 by early October. The surge comes as the ongoing conflict and mass displacement create overcrowded conditions, limited safe water, and disrupted health services. These factors also raise the risk of other preventable diseases such as measles. Yemen has recorded a total of 8,034 suspected cases and 27 deaths this year, with a quarter of those cases reported in the last four weeks.

Why it matters

A rapidly growing cholera outbreak threatens to overwhelm Yemen's war-damaged health system and endanger millions.
