Yonhap News to launch AI assistant for reporting and fact-checking
Yonhap News Agency announced it will soon roll out an AI assistant, called Yonhap LM, to aid journalists in reporting, data analysis and fact-checking.
Plans were revealed to introduce an artificial-intelligence assistant named Yonhap LM, designed to support news production tasks such as reporting, data analysis and fact-checking. The assistant will operate within the agency’s proprietary E-GENE system, which includes a speech-to-text function that can be linked to the AI. Journalists will be able to collaborate on stories by sharing data and using the tool to verify statements and dissect interviews.
A beta rollout is slated for Yonhap’s reporters and editors shortly. Hwang Dae-il, the agency’s chief executive officer, said the initiative aims to deliver timely, accurate and in-depth journalism in an era of rampant misinformation, positioning AI as a supportive instrument rather than a replacement.
Why it matters
The AI assistant could improve the speed and reliability of news reporting in South Korea and set a precedent for media outlets worldwide.
