Yorke Peninsula residents miss mailed census forms, MP reports dozens of complaints

Many households on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula did not receive their census envelopes, prompting calls to MP Tom Venning; the ABS says no fines will be imposed and forms can be requested.

In the days before census night, numerous people in South Australia's Yorke Peninsula reported not receiving the postal envelope with their census number and temporary password. Federal Liberal MP for Grey, Tom Venning, said his office fielded at least 80 calls from constituents worried about the missing forms and possible penalties. The Australian Bureau of Statistics acknowledged that some areas, such as a three-kilometre stretch between Nelshaby and Napperby and towns like Maitland and Arthurton, had not yet been served.

The agency emphasized that households without forms will not be fined and that paper copies can still be requested via its website or the Census Contact Centre. Local complainants, including Creina Cullen, Arty Glazbrook and Robert Fidock, recounted reliance on mailed paperwork and limited internet access, fueling frustration and anxiety. ABS officials said further deliveries are underway and that reminders will be sent, with legal directions only issued after additional notice.

Why it matters

Missing census forms risk undercounting residents and affect resource allocation, but authorities assure no penalties while delivering replacements.
