Yorkshire sees 16% drop in businesses facing critical financial distress
The latest BTG Red Flag Alert shows that critical financial distress among Yorkshire firms fell 16.2% to 3,007 by September 2026, while early-stage distress rose slightly.
According to BTG's Red Flag Alert research, critical financial distress among Yorkshire businesses fell to 3,007 by September 2026, a reduction of 16.2% compared with the same period last year and matching a 20.7% fall across the United Kingdom. Early-stage or ‘significant’ distress, however, rose modestly by 1.7% to 49,495 firms, echoing a 1.6% national increase. The slowdown in early-stage distress growth is notable, with quarterly increases dropping from double-digit percentages in 2024 and 2025 to just 1.7% in the latest quarter.
Sector-by-sector, utilities, manufacturing, wholesale and hotels recorded the steepest declines in significant distress, while real estate, professional services, bars and restaurants and support services posted the largest gains. Critical distress improved in 20 of 22 sectors, with food and beverages, telecommunications, media and financial services showing the biggest drops, though travel, tourism and bars and restaurants experienced rises. Julian Pitts of BTG cautioned that despite the encouraging trend, over 40,000 regional firms remain under significant pressure from costs, demand and upcoming budget uncertainty.
Why it matters
The decline suggests improving financial health for Yorkshire firms, but lingering distress signals ongoing economic challenges.
