Young contenders dominate forecasts for the 2028 presidential race
Prediction markets show a slate of candidates in their early forties leading the odds for the 2028 election, reflecting voter fatigue with consecutive septuagenarian presidents.
Following three consecutive presidents elected at ages above 70, voters seem poised to favor a younger president in the 2028 cycle. Market-based forecasts on Kalshi and Polymarket place Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Jon Ossoff as the leading contenders, with an average age of 43. By the time they would assume office in 2029, that average would rise modestly to 45.
Governor Gavin Newsom, currently 58, holds the fifth-best odds, while former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, who would be 70 at inauguration, registers only a 2% chance on Kalshi and is absent from Polymarket. Growing concerns about the age of lawmakers have spurred calls for term limits and age caps, with one outlet's poll showing roughly 80% of respondents in favor, split similarly across party lines. President Donald Trump expressed tentative support for term limits but questioned Congress's willingness to enact them, and aides from both the Trump and Biden administrations acknowledged the shifting voter sentiment toward younger candidates.
Why it matters
Voter preference for younger leaders could reshape candidate selection and campaign strategies for the 2028 election.
