Young driver crashes into Burslem kebab shop while texting, faces jail

On the morning of July 20, 2025, Daniel Mohammed, 21, was travelling on a rural road in Staffordshire when he attempted to overtake another car around a bend. While looking at his phone, he lost control of his black Ford and slammed into the front of Rose Fast Food in Burslem, flattening the restaurant’s façade and ending up in the intersection. Authorities reported that the interior of the kebab shop remained untouched, but a woman riding with Mohammed sustained a broken collarbone and two additional fractures.

Investigators also discovered that Mohammed was driving without insurance, a criminal offense in the UK. He entered guilty pleas on charges of dangerous driving, uninsured driving and mobile phone use while driving. Judge Graeme Smith sentenced him to two years and two months’ imprisonment, imposed a nearly four-year driving disqualification and ordered him to pass a remedial driving test. The judge remarked that it was astonishing more severe injuries had not occurred.
