Young driver receives suspended sentence for negligent killing in Atzmännig crash

In Uznach, the See-Gaster district court convicted a 22-year-old driver of negligent homicide after a drift stunt on the snow-covered Atzmännig parking area caused his car to plunge about ten metres into the Goldingerbach, killing his passenger. The court dismissed charges of omitted emergency aid and obstruction of fitness-to-drive assessment, but found him guilty of negligent killing, reckless accident behavior and intentional serious traffic violations.

He received an 18-month suspended prison term, a conditional fine, and was ordered to pay extensive court and attorney costs. Prosecutors had sought a six-and-a-half-year sentence for eventual intent, but the judges concluded the act was careless rather than intentional. The victim’s father listened in silence as the judgment was read, underscoring the tragedy for both families.
