Young Hiker Falls 177 Feet at Oregon's South Falls, Dies on Site
A 20-year-old visitor to Silver Falls State Park slipped off a barrier and fell from the 177-foot South Falls, dying at the scene.
Authorities say a 20-year-old man visiting Silver Falls State Park ventured off the marked path near the upper viewpoint of South Falls, the park’s tallest waterfall at 177 feet. Seeking a photo spot, he crossed a barrier and walked over a creek directly above the falls before slipping and falling into the deep pool at about 6:30 p.m. Bystanders performed CPR as first responders rushed in, but the victim was declared dead at the scene.
The Marion County Medical Examiner released the body to local search-and-rescue teams, who completed the recovery, after which Unger Funeral Chapel took custody. Silver Falls State Park’s regional manager described the incident as a “horrific accident,” and the park’s Trail of Ten Falls continues to draw visitors despite the tragedy.
