Young Munich volunteer firefighter on trial for alleged arson series

A 21-year-old member of Munich’s volunteer fire brigade appeared before the local court accused of setting multiple fires in the city’s south district.

The Munich Amtsgericht tried a 21-year-old volunteer firefighter who prosecutors say started several fires in the city’s southern neighborhoods from summer to autumn 2023. Alleged incidents include setting fire to a container in a trash-bin shelter, igniting a municipal green area, causing a waste-management container to burn, and a blaze in a basement of the apartment building where he lives. Authorities claim the arson was meant to allow him to arrive first on scene and enhance his standing among fellow firefighters.

Police noted arson indicators at each location, and his behavior—such as appearing in his gear before alarms—raised suspicion among his peers. The defendant, who is in his third apprenticeship year as a construction equipment operator, declined to comment on the charges and provided only personal background details.

Why it matters

Alleged arson by a firefighter undermines public trust in emergency services.
