Young, NSW Unveils One of Regional Australia's Largest Mosques

After years of planning, Young in the Riverina region of New South Wales now hosts one of the biggest regional mosques in Australia, with capacity for roughly 1,000 congregants. Muslims comprise about 10% of the town's 11,000 inhabitants, prompting the replacement of a modest 1990s building with a facility five times larger. Community figures describe the new mosque as evidence that Muslim families, now in their fourth and fifth generations, are no longer confined to enclaves but are becoming part of the broader multicultural fabric.

The presence of the mosque and a nearby Islamic school has been highlighted by Hilltops Council mayor Brian Ingram as a draw for additional Muslim families seeking local religious and cultural support. The centre also runs community outreach, including free meals across the region. While recent national stories about a former resident linked to ISIS and a school principal's social-media comments have briefly clouded perceptions, local leaders emphasize that those cases do not define the wider community. They aim to focus on positive contributions and maintain an open, inclusive environment for all residents.
