Young Thug's legal team faces Lil Wayne bus driver lawsuit in Cobb County
Attorneys for Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug appeared in Cobb County court to contest a suit by a former tour-bus driver who blames the artist and Birdman for a 2015 shooting that injured no one.
In a Cobb County courtroom, lawyers for Grammy-award winner Young Thug, whose legal name is Jeffery Williams, contested a civil claim filed by Alvin Lewis, the driver of Lil Wayne’s tour bus during a 2015 shooting in Atlanta. The bus was struck by bullets as it left a concert, but no passengers were hit; Lewis now seeks damages for emotional trauma, asserting that Williams and fellow rapper Bryan Williams (Birdman) paid the gunman, Jimmy Winfrey, to carry out the attack.
Prosecutors previously connected Winfrey to the incident after police recovered his vehicle with an assault rifle, though his earlier gang-related conviction was later overturned by the Georgia Supreme Court. The defense maintains that the plaintiff’s evidence consists of hearsay and speculative gang affiliations, lacking any eyewitness testimony. Judge Eric Brewton has dismissed much of the submitted material and will decide soon whether the decade-old suit can move forward.
Why it matters
The lawsuit could set a precedent for holding music artists liable for alleged violent actions linked to their associates.
