Young Workers Abandon Companies Over Broken Promises and AI-Driven Layoffs

A wave of layoffs blamed on AI, abrupt health-benefit cuts and forced office returns is eroding trust among a generation of employees.

Across the United States, a growing number of employees are experiencing sudden terminations that are justified with AI as an excuse, even though many firms had planned the cuts beforehand. The “at-will” employment model allows companies to end contracts without notice, often terminating health insurance on the same day, while COBRA coverage can cost families nearly $27,000 a year. High-profile firms—including Amazon, Starbucks and Meta—have rescinded remote-work agreements, imposed return-to-office mandates, and increased executive compensation shortly after reducing staff, widening the disparity between CEO pay (now up over 1,000% since 1978) and worker wages (up only 24%).

Surveys reveal that a majority of workers feel misled, and confidence in large corporations has fallen to a historic low, especially among those under 35. This loss of faith is reflected in a surge of new business filings, with 5.5 million applications in 2023, and a rising preference among recent graduates to start their own ventures rather than climb corporate ladders.

Why it matters

It shows how employment practices and AI-cited layoffs are reshaping worker loyalty and fueling a new wave of entrepreneurship.
