Youth AI advocacy group unveils 2027 safety platform urging congressional action
Design It For Us, a youth-led AI safety coalition, released a 2027 policy agenda calling on Congress to enact safeguards for young users.
Design It For Us announced an ambitious AI policy framework for 2027, drawing on feedback from more than 700 young members across 40 states. The agenda seeks to avert existential AI threats, empower states to craft their own regulations, and protect users from fabricated digital content. Zamaan Qureshi, a co-founder, said Anthropic’s leaked bill falls short and called on Congress to pass comprehensive legislation before 2027 ends.
Key proposals include granting the government power to halt deployment of dangerous models, requiring large AI companies to undergo independent testing and meet baseline capability standards, and holding firms liable for injuries caused by their AI systems. The group also stresses that states should retain flexibility to regulate AI locally. Their experience influencing kids-online safety bills positions them to shape upcoming AI legislation, especially if Democrats gain control of Congress next month.
Why it matters
Young people could face unchecked AI risks unless new laws protect them now.
