Youth climate group blocks mining site at Førdefjorden as police begin removals
Natur og Ungdom protesters chained themselves to the entrance of Nordic Mining’s site in Vevring, Sunnfjord, and police started clearing them.
Natur og Ungdom announced a direct action at the Nordic Mining facility in Vevring, Sunnfjord, where roughly twenty demonstrators attached themselves to the site’s entrance early Friday. Police records show the first removals targeted two protesters who had linked themselves to the gate, preventing staff from entering the area. The group says the protest targets a newly issued permission for depositing mining waste in Førdefjorden, arguing it undermines a Supreme Court decision that declared earlier permits invalid.
Sigrun Aasland, the climate and environment minister, stated that the ministry has issued a limited-time permit while the former authorisations remain suspended. Sigrid Hoddevik Losnegård, leader of Natur og Ungdom, criticized the arrests of youth activists while companies continue operations without consequences. Police continue to clear the remaining demonstrators from the site.
