YouTube Tightens Partner Program Requirements, Prompting Mixed Reactions from Creators
YouTube will raise the watch-time and Shorts-view thresholds for new Partner Program applicants starting February 1, 2027, while existing members keep their current benefits.
YouTube announced that, beginning February 1, 2027, new entrants to its Partner Program will need 8,000 qualified watch hours over the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the prior 90 days, both twice the current levels, while the 1,000-subscriber requirement remains unchanged. Existing partners will retain their present terms, and a separate Shorts threshold of 10 million views in 90 days will determine eligibility for Shorts-specific ad and subscription revenue.
Creators such as Xavier Collins of Wonder Studios view YouTube chiefly as a discovery tool rather than a primary income source, whereas independent filmmakers like Ikenna Mokwe and Kavan Cardoza rely on sponsorships and direct audience support. Nate Stone of DittoDub highlighted that revenue impact varies by channel size, and expressed concern that rolling view targets could push creators toward repetitive content. YouTube also plans to expand non-ad monetization options, though details are pending.
Why it matters
The new thresholds will reshape how creators earn from YouTube, influencing content strategies and platform reliance.
