YouTuber identifies hinge flaw as cause of iPhone Duo screen cracks

Creator CuriousHagi reproduced a cracked screen on the iPhone Duo and traced the failure to a thin linking hinge component.

Users have been sharing videos of iPhone Duo screens shattering shortly after purchase, often at an identical location. In a hands-on test, YouTuber CuriousHagi intentionally broke a unit and opened it to investigate. The device’s hinge comprises a gear-like core and two sets of linking hinges; the middle link is noticeably thinner than the others.

This slender piece fractured at a small notch, which appears to be its weakest point. Additional wear marks where the hinge meets the support plate indicate it may snag during operation, causing the crack. The findings point to a design vulnerability rather than user mishandling.

Why it matters

Identifying the hinge weakness could prompt Apple to fix a design flaw affecting early iPhone Duo owners.
