Z.ai disclosed that the enigmatic Ox Alpha model, which surfaced on OpenRouter and OpenCode on August 20 without attribution, was actually a free preview of its forthcoming GLM-5.3-Flash AI system. The company explained that the test was conducted anonymously to collect user feedback, and the model quickly became the week’s most accessed AI service, running on Chinese AI chips. Chinese netizens on Weibo erupted in celebration, with a hashtag about Z.ai’s claim amassing thousands of posts and ranking among the platform’s top 20 trending topics, garnering more than 13 million views in less than 24 hours.

Users from Beijing, Chongqing and Sichuan praised the model’s impressive capabilities, affordability, and the demonstration of Chinese chip efficiency. International attention arrived when Stripe chief executive Patrick Collison described the model as “very impressive” on X. The episode adds to a series of recent Chinese AI breakthroughs, including Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, which have also drawn global interest.
