Zack Polanski calls Heathrow third runway a betrayal of climate goals
Zack Polanski denounced the proposed Heathrow third runway as a breach of the UK's climate commitments, citing warnings from the Climate Change Committee.
In a recent statement, Zack Polanski condemned the plan for a third runway at Heathrow, labeling it a betrayal of climate commitments, community health, and children's futures. He referenced the Climate Change Committee's assessment that current UK policies offer no viable route to meet legally-binding climate targets if the airport expands. The committee also warned the government lacks a credible plan to cut aviation emissions, suggesting future ticket price hikes to fund net-zero measures.
Minister Martin McCluskey brushed aside the advice, while Chancellor John Healey supported the £49 billion project, which would raise annual flights to 756,000 and passengers to 150 million. Heathrow's spokesperson argued that expansion need not pit economic growth against net-zero, citing existing technologies and potential carbon tax revenues. Polanski criticized Labour for pushing the scheme despite the advisory, calling the political stance reckless.
