Zambia police call opposition leader Brian Mundubile for questioning over alleged security plot

Zambian police have summoned opposition figure Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu for interview about a purported national-security threat.

Zambian police in Lusaka have issued summons for opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu to be questioned about a supposed scheme that threatens national security. Mundubile, the runner-up in last week’s vote who alleges the election was rigged to secure President Hakainde Hichilema’s second term, has pledged to challenge the outcome in court. Officials said the interview is part of an investigation into an alleged plot, noting that the duo had taken refuge “under international law with a known international organisation,” though no name was provided.

Mundubile could not be reached for comment but has previously dismissed the police’s plot allegations as fabricated. He fled after a police raid following the August 13 election, during which several opposition figures were arrested and former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was shot dead. Call-out notices have also been served on the lawyers representing Mundubile and Zulu.

Why it matters

The summons underscores rising political tension in Zambia as the election result is disputed and security forces intervene.
