Zelensky calls for a high-level security summit in Brussels with US, EU and NATO

President Volodymyr Zelensky said a security meeting will be convened in Brussels this week, bringing together Ukraine, the United States, the EU and NATO leaders.

In an interview, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that European partners are arranging a security conference in Brussels for early next week. The gathering will feature Ukraine, the United States represented by President-level officials, the European Union, and NATO led by its secretary-general. The initiative follows a series of talks in Oslo that included US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Støre, and senior advisers from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, as well as European Commission Chief of Staff Björn Seibert.

Witkoff subsequently met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, prompting Europeans to seek a deeper discussion beyond a simple briefing. Zelensky also referenced US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s invitation to Putin for the upcoming G20 summit, suggesting it could host a trilateral dialogue among Ukraine, the US and Russia. The final roster of attendees for the Brussels meeting has not been confirmed.

Why it matters

The summit could shape security guarantees for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
