Zelensky invited to Budapest ceremony marking 70th anniversary of 1956 uprising

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenszkij has been invited to attend next week’s Budapest commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

Deputy cabinet chief Ihor Zsovkva said that President Volodimir Zelenszkij has been invited to Budapest for the series of ceremonies honoring the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, with the visit slated for next week. Kyiv views the invitation as an opportunity to convert the recent diplomatic thaw into concrete advances in bilateral relations, expressing gratitude for Hungary’s assistance in Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations.

Zsovkva said Ukraine remains optimistic about deepening ties and would welcome Hungarian Prime Minister Magyar Péter as a guest in the Ukrainian capital. He added that Kyiv is open to hosting the Hungarian leader in other Ukrainian locations as well. The invitation underscores a broader effort by both neighboring states to strengthen cooperation amid regional challenges. The events are expected to feature official speeches and remembrance activities.

Why it matters

The visit signals a warming of Ukraine-Hungary ties and could boost Ukraine’s EU accession prospects.
