Zelensky says Ukraine struggles to intercept Russian ballistic missiles after deadly raid
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine still finds it hard to shoot down Russian ballistic missiles after a large attack that killed at least two people.
In a post on X, President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the difficulty Ukraine faces in intercepting Russian ballistic missiles following a massive overnight strike that killed at least two civilians. He noted that Ukrainian aircraft shot down 175 aerial targets, yet ballistic missiles remain especially hard to counter. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga also denounced the attack, which damaged residential areas in Kyiv, a market near Odessa, a train locomotive on the Kyiv-Sumi line, and a station in Sumi, while also affecting Zaporijia and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
The Ukrainian Air Force said it intercepted 31 of 32 cruise missiles and downed two ballistic missiles, but did not disclose the total number launched. Zelensky announced fresh talks with countries and firms that could supply PAC-3 missiles for Patriot air-defence systems and help develop European anti-ballistic capabilities. The strike came shortly after U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner left Kyiv, prompting the foreign minister to link the timing to President Donald Trump’s peace mission.
