Zelensky says US threatened to halt intelligence sharing over Ukraine's drone attacks
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Trump administration warned it could stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine unless Kyiv ended long-range drone strikes on Russian oil refineries.
During a conversation, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the Trump administration warned Ukraine that intelligence sharing could be suspended unless Kyiv halted its long-range drone attacks on Russian oil refineries. Zelensky said his generals confirmed the threat was conveyed at the military level. He argued the strikes are intended to degrade Russia’s ability to wage war and will continue until Moscow stops targeting Ukrainian energy facilities.
Zelensky also noted that Trump’s temporary lift of sanctions on Russian diesel would not affect U.S. fuel prices because the volumes are too small. He rejected Trump’s accusation that Ukraine was responsible for rising diesel costs, pointing instead to the war in Iran and the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz as the primary cause. Additionally, he mentioned that Russia, with U.S. approval, plans to supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the global market, boosting its exports.
Why it matters
The disclosure shows U.S. leverage over Ukraine’s military tactics and highlights how energy politics intersect with the war.
