Zelenskyy Rejects Wartime Election Call Amid Growing Political Pressure

Since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine has suspended national elections, and public opinion favors waiting until hostilities cease. Former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, recently dismissed, publicly called for a legal and secure mechanism to conduct elections amid the war, marking the most significant political test for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy responded that holding a vote now would be a “tsunami for the state,” potentially fracturing the nation and hindering the push to end the conflict.

Security concerns are paramount, with a 1,200-km front line, ongoing bombardments, and millions of displaced citizens both inside Ukraine and across the European Union. Organising polling stations abroad and ensuring soldiers on the front can vote present logistical nightmares, while large swaths of the population remain under Russian occupation. Although Zelenskyy has not ruled out a future wartime vote if allies can guarantee safety, no concrete plan has emerged. The debate continues as the president’s term expired in 2024 but he remains in office under martial-law provisions.
