Zoo Negara reports all animals unharmed after flash floods

Persistent downpours led the Sungai Pandan and Sungai Kemensah rivers in Hulu Klang to merge and overflow, flooding sections of Zoo Negara in Kuala Lumpur to depths of roughly 1.2 m. Deputy president Rosly Lana explained that fast-moving water prevented any vehicles, even trams, from entering the reptile, hippo and savannah areas. Despite the inundation, no animals were reported injured or dead; the hippos were unaffected because they naturally spend time submerged.

Staff cleared thick mud and restored the enclosures within two hours, and cleaning and monitoring efforts are ongoing. Lana noted the response was better than during previous major floods, with no fatalities recorded.
