Alberta polling stations stay open later after delayed openings, pushing back referendum result release
Late openings at several Alberta voting sites led Elections Alberta to extend hours, delaying the posting of unofficial referendum results until all polls close.
Elections Alberta announced that numerous polling stations in the province experienced delayed openings on Monday, resulting in the agency authorising extended voting hours at those locations. The delays, caused by various issues now resolved, mean the final affected site will not close until after 10 p.m., which postpones the release of unofficial referendum results until all stations are confirmed closed. Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure signed off on the extended hours to ensure voters receive the full advertised service time.
Regular stations continue to operate from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The agency also appealed for the public to treat election workers with patience and respect. A comprehensive list of the locations and their new closing times was published.
Why it matters
Extended voting hours affect when Albertans will see the unofficial referendum outcome and reflect the administration of the election process.
