Almost 500 Ukrainian drones approach Moscow as a Sberbank data centre is hit in Saratov

Around 493 Ukrainian drones flew toward the Moscow region on Oct. 13-14, with most intercepted, while a Sberbank data centre in Saratov’s Balakovo was struck, killing one person.

From the night of Oct. 13 into the early hours of Oct. 14, Moscow’s air defenses faced a wave of 493 Ukrainian drones heading toward the capital region, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. The majority were intercepted at distance, and 180 were destroyed as they approached the city, with officials reporting no injuries or property loss in Moscow. In Russia’s Saratov region, Governor Roman Busargin confirmed that drones hit the town of Balakovo, damaging several residential buildings and causing one fatality, though he later emphasized that essential services continued to function.

Telegram channels circulated video showing a Pantsir system engaging targets on a highway, and other channels claimed the strikes hit the MegaCOD data centre built for Sberbank, a project promised by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko to become the nation’s largest. The investigative outlet Agentstvo verified photos of damage to the data centre, and the Ukrainian manufacturer Fire Point also reported the attack. Additionally, the Exilenova+ channel confirmed a hit on the MZ Balakovo metallurgical plant, which produces steel and rolled metal products.

Why it matters

The attacks show Ukraine’s ability to strike deep into Russian territory, targeting both civilian infrastructure and high-value data assets.

How the sides frame it
